A POST THAT FEELS TRUE AND IS LOGICALLY FALSE.
After staring at this in disbelief for several hours, I had to sit down and write my way through it. First for myself. Then for you. Because it cannot stand unchallenged in this form any longer.
So let me begin by conceding what is true.
Yes, heat kills vulnerable Danes.
During the 2018 heatwave, around 250 more died than expected, in 2022 around 255, in 2024 approximately 174. These are real people, and it's almost always the same ones - elderly and frail with heart, kidney or lung disease, who just tip over that week the heat holds.
They deserve protection.
That far I follow.
But then read the party's own conclusion.
The solution they propose is -
"Let's stop the climate crisis and make Denmark fossil-free now."
Stop the climate crisis? Denmark? Fossil-free now? I mean, what?
And when you're done pondering that, you have to ask the question the entire post rests on - what on earth does that do for precisely these people?
The answer is - NOTHING that can be measured.
Denmark accounts for 0.08 percent of the world's CO2 emissions. Even if we shut down every single fossil source in the country tomorrow, the effect on the global temperature - and thus on the heat that strikes Danish elderly - would be too small to register.
Add to that time - climate action works over decades and ONLY globally. The vulnerable elderly the post is about will have died of old age long before any Danish emission could theoretically reach a thermometer.
Not A SINGLE ONE OF THEM is saved by "fossil-free now".
And here's what reveals the post's hypocrisy.
There actually exists a solution that saves them - and it isn't mentioned with a single word. Research shows that over half of heat-related deaths can be prevented, and that countries with a heatwave action plan have fewer deaths. Danish medical researchers are crying out right now precisely because Denmark, as one of the few European countries, lacks such a plan. Cooling, sun shading, insulation, supervision of the most vulnerable, early warning. Cheap, quick, documented - and effective already this summer.
If you seriously want to ensure that the elderly needn't fear summer, that's what you write on the placard. Not a symbolic national CO2-zero that could at the earliest be felt by the yet unborn - and only if you can feel the difference of a thousandth of a degree celsius. I don't know if you can?
And then we come to the part no one really dares say aloud.
In a cold country like ours, far more die of cold than of heat - globally the figure is around nine times as many. Until now, and with moderate warming like what we've experienced, a warmer world has therefore meant FEWER temperature deaths here, not more, because the drop in cold death exceeds the rise in heat death.
The far greater killer, cold, never gets a red poster with crying emojis and demands for permanent societal upheaval. Only the smaller of the two entries is made into crisis. Why?
And then there's the price, which is rarely stated plainly.
Transforming Denmark isn't free. The Climate Council's own figures run to 15-20 billion kroner per year just to reach the 2030 target. I'm not claiming it upends the economy - because it doesn't, and I won't sell you a scare model the way the post sells you one.
I'm claiming something more precise - that we're paying a large, certain bill now for a benefit that's distant, global, and for our part unmeasurable. CEPOS has calculated it and finds that when the target is tightened, the cost is more than TEN TIMES greater than the climate benefit the global account gets from it.
Ten times more paid than it benefits.
But the worst part isn't really the number. It's what that money could have done. Every billion we spend forcing our 0.08 percent down toward zero - a movement no thermometer will ever be able to read - is a billion we're not spending on the cooling and action plans that actually save the elderly the post weeps over.
And then we need to read what actually stands there. Because it doesn't say "climate neutral," which is Denmark's - incidentally completely unrealistic - adopted goal for 2045. It says "fossil-free." ZERO fossil. And it says "NOW."
So let's take them at their word.
Zero fossil now means Denmark's single largest emitter, the Aalborg Portland cement factory, must close tomorrow. Because a large part of its CO2 doesn't come from fuel but from chemistry - when chalk is burned to cement - and cement is one of civilisation's four bearing pillars - it releases CO2 regardless of what you fire with.
The factory's own director says it plainly - without chalk there's no cement, and free of chalk you'll never be. The closest you get to fossil-free cement is capturing the CO2 afterward, and when the state tendered money for precisely that, nine out of ten companies withdrew after burning through half a billion on consultants, because it was too expensive and too uncertain.
And take then the company that ought to be the easiest case.
Does "fossil-free now" also mean that Novo - the world's richest, most ambitious, already green-power-driven pharmaceutical company - must from tomorrow produce without a single fossil source?
Because in literal terms, including raw materials, plastic, solvents and global transport, neither Novo nor any other medicine producer on the planet can deliver that "now" - and least of all because Denmark decides it. Novo's own factory already runs on green power. But 96 percent of the company's footprint lies outside the factory gate, in a global value chain of plastic, fermentation feedstock and cold-chain transport that no Danish law touches. The point isn't that Novo flees over a gas boiler. The point is that even the world's best company cannot fulfill "fossil-free now," because the fossil inputs sit in materials that don't yet exist fossil-free at scale.
A demand NO ONE can fulfill isn't a policy. It's an incantation.
Do you need to borrow a calculator to tap on a bit before you understand what that does to the country's total economy to stop all industry? Or does it compute?
But that's why this still isn't a lie. It's something that survives less scrutiny than a lie. Each individual piece feels true - the dead are real, the grief is real, the heat is real.
Only the connection between them is false - a genuine human loss harnessed to a mechanism that doesn't save a single one of the people it invokes, while the solution that would save them is silenced, and a word - "fossil-free" - that cannot be delivered by anyone, least of all "now."
A national party can certainly stand up with real dead behind a wrong cure and an impossible demand. But then this must be said aloud, every time -
You point to the elderly and sell us something that doesn't save them. If you truly wish them well, give them an action plan and air conditioning. Not a feeling.
And that's that.
