Bless Whoever Hates You

Found this cap online last year and had to own it.

A sentence that's easier to wear than to live by - I'll leave you with it, so you can head into the weekend and think about it a bit.

GOD BLESS WHOEVER HATING ON ME

You can read it as attitude.
It is that too.

But you can also pause at it for a moment, because it says something almost no one says anymore.

It doesn't say - I don't care about those who hate me. Because indifference is easy, and it's everywhere.

That's not me.

It also doesn't say - I hate them back, because that's even easier, and that's the direction nearly everything is moving right now - the anger answered with anger, the contempt answered with contempt, until no one can remember who started it anymore, and everyone feels justified in continuing. That's how the Middle East has worked for 1,400 years.

That's not me either.

It says something third.

Something I wish I could fully grasp - and make my own. It says -

Bless them.

Not because they deserve it, but because they are human beings, and because Man is made in God's image - even when he hates, even when he's wrong, even when he stands on the other side shouting.

Because.

Isn't that roughly what needs to be said?

Yes. Yes, it is.

All other paths lead where? To more of the madness spreading around us, where people are no longer people but positions - and positions that shouldn't be understood but fought down.

Because that's what this development does to us. When the way we speak to each other becomes the way we judge each other, we burn something that's hard to rebuild - the common ground you can return to when the fight is over.

Every disagreement needs such a place. A place where you can still meet as human beings, after having been opponents as positions.

But the tone spreading these years leaves no way back. It makes every clash final. And slowly it normalizes a conception and a Story about the world where that's how it should be - where the other isn't someone you should be able to look in the eye afterwards, but someone who needs to be gone.

The blessing is the only thing Hatred can't use for anything.

So with the wish for a blessed weekend to you - and your family, if you're lucky enough to have one.

Lovely that you're following along.

Even if you think I'm a fool - or hate me ☺️
