PHASING OUT THE COVERING BAN?
I took a walk in Frederiksberg the week before we left for summer holiday. Yes, I actually take a walk every day - if nothing else, down to the gym. And I often see this.
Because there she was again. Fully covered, only the eyes free, in the middle of the street scene, in the middle of the day. No one stopped her. No one even looked.
Yet we have a covering ban. Passed in 2018, with press conferences and serious faces. The first year, 23 fines were issued in the entire country.
Try, by comparison, to overstay seventeen seconds on a parking spot in the same place where I met her - then a man in a yellow vest comes running immediately, unable to understand the slightest reason - because THERE we mean it.
So the law apparently doesn't really apply.
That must be the conclusion?
And when a law is not enforced, it means only one thing - that you have actually decided something other than what you passed. So I'm thinking that you probably just want a slow introduction, where all parties slowly and quietly move towards each other and learn to understand the difference - no matter how abysmal and irreconcilable this difference and division is when it comes to view of humanity and worldview.
And if that's how it HAS to be, and we have no choice anyway - as with so many of the other decisions that have been made for us - then I suppose I'm allowed to make a suggestion?
What about a proper, well-thought-out phasing in of both garments. But because we're in Denmark, it has to happen with due respect for our more than century-long struggle for equality between the sexes, where we've ensured that everything must be equal, so naturally the phasing in must also happen on equal terms.
So I'm thinking. What if we make a trial period of 25 years, where we test the whole thing. And throughout the period, based on the Equal Treatment Act and so on, one simple rule applies -
For all couples where one wishes the woman to wear the garment, the man wears it too. Same fabric, same covering, same colour, same number of hours per day.
We put a couple of bureaucrats and an artificial intelligence system to monitor that the rules are followed. Daily check-ins on a new public app for a couple hundred million - or five billion - where both parties send in photos three times a day and document that the garment is worn.
And should anyone forget it, we send the man in the yellow vest by - he's in the area anyway, and he usually gets things to happen.
25 years is nothing in the big picture.
If it's really something you want?
Because if the garment is only about modesty and faith, the proposal costs nothing.
