Islam Is Not a Debate Partner, It Is a Building That Does Not Recognise Your Board

There sat a man from Hizb ut-Tahrir on Deadline, and across from him sat a skilled, well-prepared Western journalist, doing everything 'right' that he was trained to do.

He asked critically, he pressed, he demanded answers. So did the respectable politician beside him.

And yet one sat there afterwards with the sense that nothing whatsoever had happened. That the words had slid off. That the studio, the lights, the questions - the entire fine democratic machinery - had been running idle for twenty minutes.

The sense is correct. And it's worth understanding precisely why, because the explanation is not the one most people reach for.

The common explanation goes that the man is an enemy, an evil force, a kind of spiritual occupying power, and that one does not invite enemies into the studio.

The feeling behind it is understandable. But the explanation misses the mark, and that's not a detail - it's the very key if one wants to understand. Because the word enemy points to the person, to his will, his malice, his hidden agenda. And so we look for the solution there - expose him, press him, win over him.

That's precisely what the journalist tried. That's precisely what didn't work. Because the problem doesn't sit in the man.

I'll write it once more here, see if you can grasp it -

It sits in what the man is risen from.

One was not speaking with a human being that evening in the studio. One was speaking with a 1,400-year-old architecture that had borrowed a face to speak through.

Let me explain what I mean, because this is where the entire misunderstanding lies buried.

A debate, as we understand it, is a Western invention with a specific assumption built in - that truth is not finished. That it grows forth between people who test each other's arguments, and that both parties therefore in principle can move, when the better argument shows itself. This is the inheritance from Athens - conversation as path to knowledge - melted together with the inheritance from Jerusalem - the individual human being with conscience, responsibility and freedom to change conviction.

OUR ENTIRE public sphere, our parliaments, our TV studios are built on that assumption. We don't think about it, just as the fish doesn't think about the water.

But Islam is, in its own self-understanding, the exact opposite of an unfinished conversation. The Quran is in orthodox teaching not a text humans wrote about God - it is God's own, eternal, uncreated speech, dictated word for word. Muhammad is the seal of the prophets - after him comes NOTHING new, revelation is CLOSED. And the text says it itself, black on white, in the verse counted among the last to be revealed -

"Today I have perfected your religion for you."

Perfected. Finished. Boom. Truth closed. Snip snap snout.

There exists in the system a word for changing, adding or renewing - bidʿa - and it's not a progress word. It's one of the most serious charges that exists. Innovation in the faith is in itself a crime against it.

You can see what that does, can't you?

Understand, then, what it means for the man in the studio. He doesn't sit with an opinion he's thought his way to, and which he therefore could think his way out of again. He sits with what he KNOWS is God's perfect, eternal and unchangeable order for Man and the world. He CANNOT move - not because he's stubborn, but because there exists in his architecture no place to move to. Every concession would not be an adjustment of his opinion but a betrayal of the perfect.

To ask him to meet us in the middle is like asking a man to saw half the foundation away from under his own house as a sign of good will. It's not going to happen. It would in his own world be the greatest sin he could commit.

And now it gets uncomfortable, because the asymmetry goes deeper still.

When we invite him into the studio, we believe there's a conversation happening. He knows, however, that something else is happening. For him the studio is not a place where truth is to be found - it IS found, 1,400 years ago, complete. The studio is a podium. The airtime is dawa, invitation, mission. He has learned precisely what must be said in which language - outwardly rights, dialogue, religious freedom and constitution - all our own words, played back to us with calm voice - and inwardly, in Friday's language, an entirely different speech about Ummah and caliphate and the coming of the law.

It's not hypocrisy in his own view. It's method. Our openness is not something he shares - it's a tool he uses. We provide the water, he sails on it.

That's why the debate went as it went. That's why it goes like that EVERY TIME, and that's why it will go like that next time. The journalist didn't fail - he just played chess against an opponent who doesn't recognise the board, with rules the opponent only follows as long as they serve him. One cannot lose a debate one never participated in. And one cannot win over a building with arguments. Because there exists not the argument, formulated in any human language, that can move a structure whose basic claim is that it is elevated above human arguments.

Islam is the most strongly written spiritual architecture the world has ever produced - written, precisely, because it stands in text, untouchable, beyond reach of time's tooth and the talk show's critical questions. ONLY the ridiculous modern European, brought up with everything being able to be process-facilitated and dialogued into place, can think to believe that 1,400 years of closed perfection lets itself be dissolved by twenty minutes of critical conversation before the weather.

Note then what does NOT follow from this, because it's just as important.

It doesn't follow that the human being in the studio is evil, or that people born into Islam are enemies in the word's ordinary sense. The human being and the architecture are two different things - that's my entire errand, here and in everything I write. Millions of Muslims live peacefully, precisely to the extent they live LOOSER from the architecture's full consequence than Hizb ut-Tahrir does.

The uncomfortable thing is just that the man in the studio is not a misunderstanding of the system. He is its most consistent reader. He hasn't distorted the architecture - he's just not loosened it. That's why no imam can disprove him with text in hand, only drown him out, and that's why he smiles so calmly - he KNOWS he stands on the building's ground, while his critics stand on its cornices.

What follows then?

Something very simple, which our great- and great-great-grandparents would have found self-evident, and which only half a century's dialogue romanticism has made controversial - that conversation has boundaries, and that those boundaries are not conversation's enemies but its foundation.

Debate as an institution survives only among those who recognise its assumption - that none of us owns the finished truth, and that we therefore owe each other arguments. The one who steps into conversation with a perfect, unchangeable, God-given order at his back and declares everything negotiable except precisely that, does not participate in the conversation. He dismantles it from within, with its own rules of courtesy as shield.

Him one does not owe a podium.
Him one owes a clear message.

Because that's the sober conclusion, when all indignation has steamed off - there was never anything to negotiate about. Not because the will was missing on our part, but because the possibility never existed in the system.

One cannot meet in the middle with the perfect - the perfect has no middle to meet on. There exists only its order and all the rest, which has not yet been subjected to it. We can keep inviting the architecture into the studio and believe we're speaking with a guest. Or we can see it as it is.

One doesn't negotiate with a building. One decides whether it should stand on one's ground.

The answer - if the Western world still wants to be the Western and offer its citizens freedom rights, freedom of conscience and Man's inviolability - is self-evident.
