Look at a European City on an Ordinary Afternoon in 2026

Look at a European city on an ordinary afternoon in 2026.

It works. The trains run, the museums are open, the cafés fill up at lunch, and when evening comes, the old facades lie in a warm light that makes it all resemble a civilisation which long ago solved its problems and now simply enjoys having been right.

That is the first thing to notice. How good it still looks. The second, and this is harder to see, is that almost nothing holding it up was built in our own time, and almost nothing we build now will hold anything up after us.

For beneath the surface the arithmetic has already turned, and that is where one must begin if one wants to understand at all what Europe is stuck in.

The first is POPULATION.

We are not having enough children, and we have not done so for two generations. A continent that lies permanently below the number needed to replace itself is not a continent with a problem, but a continent that has quietly stopped wanting to continue. The pensions, the health system, the entire way we have promised each other old age, rests on a population pyramid that no longer exists, where the few in work must carry the many who have left. The exits exist, but they are all locked. It is probably why the politicians look so stone dead in the face when asked about the future by the Man on Television.

For yes. One can bring in labour from outside on a scale that corrects the arithmetic - but in the same movement it changes both the people, culture and society that the arithmetic was about in the first place. And thus one saves the number by abandoning what the number was supposed to protect. We see the consequences of this catastrophe strategy in England, France, Sweden, Belgium and others in these years.

Yes. One can raise the pension age and lower benefits until the promise of an old age in peace is effectively withdrawn. We also experience this at home... except for the pension age of those on Christiansborg.

Or one can hope that Europeans will one day begin having children again - which NO policy has ever managed to make them do.

Three doors, and none of them can be opened without giving up something no one dares say aloud they have given up.

The second is ENERGY.

We have phased out our own cheap foundation, shut down plants for principled ideological reasons and bound ourselves to a transition whose timetable we chose before we had the technology to fulfil it. The result is that European industry pays several times as much for its energy as those it must compete with in China and in the USA. Heavy industry, chemicals, steel, fertiliser, everything that once made us the world's workshop, cannot live with those prices, and it is moving - facility by facility, without headlines, so quietly that one can grow accustomed to the loss before discovering it.

The uncomfortable solution lies right there, and therefore no one says it, because it sounds either like nuclear power at a pace we have spent forty years making politically impossible, or like the one sentence the entire system is built around not having to say - that the "green" timetable and industrial survival cannot both be true at the same time. Choose.

The third is the WELFARE STATE.

It was erected in a time of high growth and a young population, and must now pay for three things at once, each of which is unmanageable on its own. An ageing population, a green transition and a defence we have neglected, out of an economy that barely grows any longer. The money is not there, and it can only be obtained in two ways - through a growth which everything else blocks, or through cuts in precisely what more than anything else determines what it even means to be European after the war.

NO elected official wins an election by telling voters the model cannot be paid for. So it is not said, and what is not said is not solved.

The fourth is DEFENCE.

We let another continent look after us for more than seventy years and used the peace it gave to spend on ourselves. And now that the umbrella has become uncertain, it dawns on us that we must rebuild a capability we have forgotten we had, at a price we cannot pay, in an economy that does not grow, and which therefore can only be taken from one place, namely from all the good things we have grown accustomed to giving each other instead.

Guns or butter, it was once called - and Europe chose butter for three generations, and the bill for that choice is only now being laid on the table.

The fifth is the INTERNAL MARKET.

Which never really became one market - twenty-seven countries, twenty-seven rule sets, twenty-seven walls a company runs into as soon as it tries to become large, and a capital that does not gather in one place but seeps out, across the Atlantic, into American stocks and American dreams, because the Europeans' own savings can find everything but a domestic place to grow. Draghi wrote it all down, the hole of about eight hundred billion euros a year, the capital market that should have been one long ago, and everyone nodded approvingly, and nothing happened... because what is required is a far deeper fusion, a surrender of control over money and tax and rules that no people have voted yes to, and which no people are being asked about.

The sixth is REGULATION.

Here it becomes almost beautiful in a sad tragicomic way, because Europe has become a superpower in writing the rules for precisely the things it can no longer build itself.

We author the world's legislation on artificial intelligence we do not ourselves have. We export paragraphs, reporting requirements and the precautionary principle as a way of life, while others export products, and we call it 'values', because it is easier than calling it by its proper name. The uncomfortable solution is to cut most of it away and live with more risk. But we cannot, because caution is no longer a policy - it has become our self-image, our identity - we are "the civilisation that takes care", and one does not cut into one's own mirror image.

The seventh follows from all the others - because there is no EUROPEAN LEAD JERSEY.

None of the platforms the rest of the world now builds upon are ours. The capital is gone, the talent travels, the energy is too expensive. The continent that invented the modern world does not own a single one of the tools the next world must be built with.

And beneath all the numbers lies the one number that determines the others - PRODUCTIVITY.

It has flattened out and remained there, while the distance to the Americans has grown year by year for two decades. Because if each working hour does not become more valuable, none of all the rest can be paid for, and it does not become more valuable by itself.

Let us catch our breath before reading on... one risks fainting from this.

One can read that entire list and still overlook what makes it a trap and not just a task. Because. There is no Europe that can decide its way out of this. There are twenty-seven who can each say no, twenty-seven electorates, twenty-seven timelines, and even when the diagnosis lies written down, clear and signed and presented to all, there exists no body that can rise and act upon it.

And the paralysis of action is not an accident. It is built into the very way we have chosen to be together. For here, at the very end, lies the actual lock, the one that holds all the other locks in place. Because not one of the exits I have just described can be said aloud in the Language we have left to say things in.

One cannot speak plainly about birth rates and about who comes instead, without having a word pinned to oneself.

One cannot say that the "green" timetable is killing industry.

One cannot say that the welfare model cannot be paid for, or that caution has become paralysis.

Because the language itself is mined. And it is mined precisely where the Truth should be said. And it is done in such a way that the very act of making the diagnosis is treated as proof that the one making it is dangerous.

"He is surely far-right and deviant since he thinks like that" - or some imbecile label that fits the spirit of the age.

A civilisation that has made it impossible to say what is wrong with it - and what is true - cannot repair itself. Because every repair begins with a word it has forbidden itself to use.

This is where it all gathers. The solutions are not secret. They have been written down, calculated through, presented in full daylight.

They have been for a long time.

What is missing is not knowledge, and it has never been knowledge. What is missing is the courage to say what is true.

A continent that has forbidden itself to say the truth about its own condition has made its choice long before it admits there ever was one to make.

Insist - that whoever sits in the driver's seat in the new government from tomorrow, let them place their hand on the Old Book and swear to speak the Truth and nothing but the Truth. No matter how uncomfortable it is. And no matter how much it conflicts with their own ideology and politics.

Because that is the only way forward from here.
