A woman stands at the podium in the Folketing in the spring of 2048, and you can feel in the chamber that this is a big day.
She is the integration spokesperson, third generation in her party, and she is about to deliver what the press has already dubbed *The Tenth Recognition*.
She does well. She speaks calmly and seriously, as one does when saying something brave, and she says that now "the time has come to look reality in the eye".
They said that in 2025 too.
Back then it was called The Third Recognition, and it came from a young Social Democrat who had discovered that you can speak fluent Danish, get an education and hold down a job - and still want a different society than the Danish one.
Mankind has known this for six thousand years. It stands in the oldest writings we possess. But in Denmark, in 2025, it was called - wait for it - a breakthrough.
Editorials were written about his courage. But no one asked what should happen now. It wasn't that kind of recognition.
Things moved quickly after that. At least with the recognitions.
The Fourth came in 2029, when they recognised that the numbers they had stopped keeping statistics on hadn't stopped existing.
So the statistics were reintroduced under a new name and with new categories, so no one could compare with the old numbers. It was called "a strengthening of the data foundation".
The Fifth came in 2032, when they recognised that the problems hadn't disappeared along with the words. The ghetto had become a parallel society, the parallel society an transformation area, and the transformation area *an area in positive change* - and all the way through, the same people lived there, wanting the same thing. A completely different Denmark.
The Sixth came in 2036, when they recognised that what had happened in Sweden could also happen in Denmark. In reality, though, it had already happened eight years earlier. Still, they appointed a commission to investigate how Denmark could avoid ending up like Sweden. It came to consist of people who for thirty years had recommended doing as Sweden does.
The Seventh and Eighth are ones nobody really remembers. Except they were sort of about the same thing.
The Ninth came in 2045 and was the most beautiful of them all.
They recognised that the people they had once shamed for saying what had now become recognitions had been right all along. Several were named from the podium and thanked. Most of them were dead. One still lived, but wasn't invited. His tone was still a problem.
And now here she stands, in 2048, with The Tenth.
It's shorter than the others. It goes like this -
We recognise that the nine previous recognitions changed nothing.
The chamber rises and applauds. A commentator in Politikken Plus calls it the most important speech in a generation. That's also what they'd called the nine previous ones. And somewhere at the very back of the chamber sits a very young spokesperson, born long after 2025, quietly beginning to prepare The Eleventh.
Because that's what you see when you lay the series out side by side - there was never anything wrong with the recognitions. They were precise. They were true. They just came each time at the point where the truth had become so cheap that it no longer cost votes to say it, only something to act on.
They recognised and recognised and recognised instead of acting.
Not as a mistake. As a method.
Because a recognition that costs nothing is not a recognition.
It has another name.
Indulgence.
