Religion Is Not an Abdication of Responsibility

Religion is not an abdication of responsibility.
It is pattern recognition.
It is inherited wisdom.
It is navigation in darkness.

Religion has - at its core - never been about control, but about understanding.

About mapping patterns around life's deepest phenomena - Love. Death. Willingness to sacrifice. Longing. Shame. Truth. Fall. Restoration.

And transmitting them onward to people through story, ritual and symbol - so they didn't just know, but understood. Not merely with the head, but with the heart and body.

Religion was - and is - a language for the invisible. A form of existential education. Not in skills, but in understanding. Not in technique, but in wisdom. Not in "how the world works" (which science maps so beautifully) - but in "what it means to be human within it".

That religion through time has become institution, power structure and control apparatus - is not religion's fault. It is man's. It is our fall, our burden, our eternal struggle with pride, desire and fear.

But to despise religion because of the institution's failures - is like despising love because some marriages end in violence.

One must be able to distinguish.

So I repeat it again.

Religion has - at its core - never been a control system.

It has been a map.

That always emerges wherever there are people - everywhere on the planet and in all cultures - on the basis of our nature and consciousness.

The separation of the sacred and the profane.
Of the patterns we sacrifice ourselves for - and those that can be negotiated.

A deep, ancient, pattern-based map of human life's fundamental conditions.

Our longing. Our error. Our need for truth, forgiveness, direction, hope, meaning and transcendence.

A chain of stories, rituals and symbols - not created to make us slaves, but to spare us from having to start over from scratch each time a human is born.

But the modern human has severed that chain.

It stands alone now - and imagines that because it has access to all the world's information, it also has access to wisdom.

It confuses technology with recognition.
Efficiency with truth.
Freedom with rootlessness.

And worst of all.

It believes that it itself - alone - through its own experiences and impulses, can piece together a worldview, an ethic, a morality, an understanding of itself and its place in cosmos. Like a homemade patchwork quilt of random TikToks, podcasts, traumas and self-help books.

In self-overestimation it imagines that it is wiser than the thousand generations together who came before it.

But the human who has no inherited framework for meaning and patterns must invent meaning itself - and that is too much to place on one human's shoulders.

Therefore we drift.
Therefore we get lost.
Therefore the modern human is so afflicted.

For without the transmitted story - without the mythic and sacred substrate - we fall back on our own weaknesses. Our ego's optics. Our culture's contingencies.

We have forgotten that religion is a form of socially and spiritually accumulated intelligence - encoded through millennia in symbol-language, stories and experience. It is humanity's black book - not about nature's laws, but about the soul's.

To reject it because some of the institutions around it rotted, is like throwing out the family silver because the cabinet smelled of mouldy wood.

For when the sacred disappears, everything becomes ordinary. Levelled with the ground. And the ordinary quickly becomes meaningless.

When we no longer inherit patterns, we must instead invent identities.

When we are no longer born into a framework, we spend adult life searching for one - in politics, in the partner, in the body, in the career, in therapy. In vices.

But without something that is greater than us, we ourselves become the centre. And that is a curse. Not a gift.

For the individual human cannot bear the weight of having to create Truth itself, invent Morality and manufacture Meaning. It is not freedom. It is spiritual overwork.

When God dies, it is not only heaven that becomes empty. It is also the earth that becomes fluid.

For then the human must itself find its way in an ocean without stars.

Therefore we suffer.

Because we thought we were free when we threw away the compass - but discovered too late that the only thing we had won was disorientation.

Religion - the gathering of the greatest essential patterns for human life - in its true form - was never chains.

It was railing on the abyss. It was the echo from the many who walked before you. It was not prison, but architecture - built of hope and experience and pain.

It was not control.
It was care.

And it requires an inconceivable arrogance to believe that we - 100 years into the modern experiment - understand the human and life better than the thousand generations who have gone before us.

It requires humility and surrender to return to the patterns.

To the stories.

To the faith.

To that which may no longer be new - but in return works.

That restores the connection. That brings belonging, love, freedom and truth back into the transformed human heart.

So when you meet someone - or see a friendly, smiling face on your TV - who says - "You can believe whatever you want" - they are right.

But know this.

Not all belief leads to the same results.

Imagine if someone gave you a map of the patterns for health - but told you that you would become strong, healthy and vital from a diet that was nutritionally poor, sugar-filled and empty and you should barely move at minimum.

And you believed them.

Then your belief - no matter how sincere - would be harnessed to a lie. And it would not lead you toward what you in your heart longed for.

On the contrary - it would lead you away from it.

So it is also with the soul.

Some stories strengthen it.
Others weaken it.

Some patterns lead home.
Others lead astray.

And that is why it is not indifferent what you believe in.

And why the Human through all its history has attempted to gather the patterns and make them accessible to the next generation, through what you know as religion.

Happy Friday, there is high sunshine here by the coast in North Jutland - as it COMPLETELY INCREDIBLY has been every single day since we arrived four weeks ago.

What a wonderful Danish summer☀️ (or burning apocalyptic dying planet - as the media and experts want you to believe... 🤓😉)
