There is a simple test you can use on any Story they present to you

There is a simple test you can use on any Story you are presented with that promises a better world - or promises to solve the problems the world has.

It requires nothing but your ears.

The test is this - listen for where the Story places the key to the land it promises you. Outside you - or inside you.

And I know most of us already know the test. Any healthy Danish boy and girl can see it, almost from the first scene, when they read fairy tales or sit in the cinema's darkness - who is lying, who is tempting, who carries the true. The instinct is there. It is in all of us. And yet it escapes so many of us, the moment we step out into the real world.

As if the light in the hall extinguishes what the darkness lit.

All the great stories promise fundamentally the same thing. The Promised Land. Freedom, Peace, Justice, The Good Society, waiting just out there, if only. The promise is identical in all of them.

It is in the small word "if" the entire difference hides itself.

The False Story one knows from the world of tales, long before one meets it in one's own. It is the serpent in the garden, whispering that the only thing standing between you and becoming like God is God himself.

It is Wormtongue at the king's ear in Lord of the Rings. It is Scar, promising the hyenas that abundance awaits just on the other side of the lion's fall in Lion King.

The voice is always the same - low, ingratiating, and with an enemy ready.

In the real world it sounds almost identical, each time it appears, only the names change. The promised land lies just ahead of us, it says, and the only thing blocking the way is "them over there". The Jews. The rich. The kulaks. The bourgeoisie. The privileged. Those who MUST be cheating the scales to have what they have. Insert the group yourself, history has tried them all.

"Rid yourselves of them, and the door opens, and we can finally move forward."

And then notice what happens, every time someone has followed it. For the door does not open. The land never comes. There is just always a new group that turns out to be in the way.

First it was the nobility, then it was the rich farmers, then it was the farmers who were just slightly less poor than the neighbour. Then it was the doubters, the lukewarm, those who didn't clap loudly enough. And in the end it was the revolution's own men who ended up under the knife they themselves had sharpened - Stalin's old comrades stood in queue before the courts they themselves had built. That is what one means when one says the revolution devours its own children.

The Nazis promised a Thousand-Year Reich, if only the Jews were removed. They got twelve years, and they ended in ash - but before then the list had grown, as it always does.

After the Jews came the Slavic peoples, the disabled, the different-minded and the freethinkers and already in 1934 Hitler had his own old comrades shot one summer night, long before the war had even begun. In Iran the same pattern - there walked the Marxists and the left wing in 1979 arm in arm with Khomeini to topple the Shah - convinced that the promised land lay just on the other side. When he had power, it was them who - in tens of thousands upon tens of thousands - were imprisoned, hanged and shot against a wall first.

"Thanks for the help. Now it's you who are in the way of reaching forward."

The hatred does not stop when the enemy is gone. That is so essential to see. It finds a new one it can direct itself toward. It is not an error in the story - it is the very architecture of its engine. The Story never delivered what it promised. It only delivered what it demanded.

Many are beginning to weave themselves into the ancient False Story about the Jew - as that which stands in the way again.

I want to warn against that. Both for the obvious reasons - but also because it never stops there. It comes after itself afterwards. It is woven into Hatred's nature and structure and need for someone to - someone MUST - be sacrificed.

Let me then turn it around for you from here.

The True Story one also knows from the world of tales - many have just not noticed how quietly it always begins.

For it does not come from a podium, where many walk around waiting for it to start.

It comes to a shepherd boy in a field, who is too small for the armour. It comes to Frodo in his garden, who does not understand why the ring should end up with him. It comes to Moses before the burning bush, and his first answer is the same as ours would be: -

"Who am I, that I should go?"

The True Voice NEVER calls on the strongest in the square. It calls on the one who cannot himself see why it should be him.

And that is precisely why it is harder to believe in the real world. It does not shout, it whispers - and the quiet voice does not sound like something that can move the world. "What do I have to do with the promised land? I'm just me". That is how most of us dismiss it, without even noticing that we did.

But hear what it actually says, if you didn't catch it. It says that the key to the promised land never lay with them over there - it is hidden in yourself.

Align yourself with Truth, and the door unlocks. Not all at once, but little by little, like Light that grows.

It says quietly that your example will work, long before you yourself can see it. That is how it has always been. A carpenter's son from Nazareth gathered twelve ordinary men - fishermen, a tax collector - and without army, without office, without writing a single word himself, his example ended up transforming the mightiest empire the world had seen.

The same pattern repeats itself both in fairy tales and in the real world.

Simba does not win the kingdom back by gathering an army of hatred against the hyenas - he returns home when he stops fleeing from who he is, and takes his place. Frodo carries the ring all the way, not because he is strongest, but because he is willing to bear the burden himself rather than lay it on others. Gandhi walked to the sea and picked up salt from the sand - an old, thin man in a sheet - and the British Empire, which no army had been able to shake, began to yield before a human being who refused to hate and refused to lie. Martin Luther King stood in the middle of a system built on contempt and did not point to a group that should be removed, but to a promise that should be fulfilled - and he moved an entire nation by holding it fast to its own words. And Solzhenitsyn sat as one man in the camp in the USSR and decided that he would not live on lies - and when his testimony got out, an entire system began to crack, because millions suddenly dared to say what they had known all along.

None of them pointed out a group that should be removed. They aligned themselves with Truth, there where they stood - and precisely that turned out to be what could not be stopped. For the further one human being dares to move into the true, the more discover that the door stands open, and that it is possible to walk through it.

And here lies the entire difference, if one looks. Both stories demand a sacrifice. That is not what separates them.

What separates them is who is to be laid on the altar.

The False Story demands "the others" as sacrifice - their lives, their property, their children, their name. You escape. You don't have to change, not be searched, not give anything from yourself - you just have to point. That is why that story sells so well. It flatters. You are already finished, already good enough, it is only them, them over there, who remain to be removed.

The True Story on the other hand demands the opposite, and there is never a queue for that - that the sacrifice is you!

Not your blood, but your self-deception. Your excuses, your masks, everything you would rather not have brought into the light. It demands that you surrender yourself to Truth and let yourself be illuminated from innermost to outermost - and that you remain standing in the Light, ALSO when what comes into view hurts.

A life lived in truth. Or as close as one can get. No matter what it costs. That is the door the key fits.

And the strange thing, which anyone who has tried it can testify - it is not a loss. It is THE ONLY SACRIFICE that gives back more than it takes - for the only thing that burns up in that Light is what was never you.

Read that sentence again. It can be difficult to get completely to the bottom of.

So the test is simple. Ask the story where it points.

The Lie points away.
Truth points in.
