I have described this many times in other words.
Notice what is actually happening here.
A young woman, fled from Syria, attends the University of Copenhagen and lives as young Danish women live - bare arms, a glass of wine, a piece of lasagne in the canteen - and for this completely ordinary way of life is called "Dane" - as an insult - by her fellow Muslim students.
This is not just a linguistic quirk.
It is an entire position folded together in one word.
And it is worth noticing in these months, where the debate eagerly goes on regarding "when one is a Dane".
For simultaneously - and this is where it becomes revealing - the same environments want us to perceive them as one hundred percent Danish. With all their brought-along norms, their headscarves, their family-honour concepts, their parallel-law notions, their different faith and the accompanying understanding of what a Human Being is and how it should live, arrange and orient itself.
All of that is to be contained under the term "Dane" immediately, without negotiation, without adaptation, without them themselves moving a single millimeter. They cannot, because Islam's civilisational foundation - anchored in the Quran as eternal and unchangeable - is not up for negotiation.
Dane must be expanded, so it contains its own opposite. And simultaneously used as scorn against those who actually live as such.
Say it out loud and hear how it sounds.
They become offended at not being seen as Danish - while they use "Dane" as an insult against their own, who dare to be it.
Therefore the offence is not a heart-cry to belong. It is a language of power. A demand to be accepted on conditions one will not oneself live under.
It is not integration. It is the opposite of integration, dressed in integration's vocabulary.
The young woman from Syria has already seen it. Those who have fled from it, see and experience it far more clearly than any of us who are from here.
And she says it herself - she has never felt so controlled and surveilled by other people, as she does in Denmark. She has fled from a society and finds it again, rebuilt by peers at a Danish university in 2026.
That ought to make anyone who means something serious with words like freedom, equality and enlightenment, stop.
You cannot demand to be seen as a Dane and use Dane as an insult at the same time. The one rejects the other.
The offence is therefore not a cry to belong.
It is a demand, to be allowed not to.
And then let the world's historical memory help you along.
Imagine it was your daughter. Your son. Surveilled by peers at a university, because she did not dress right, because he ate the wrong thing, because they lived as young people live in a free country.
It will be. Perhaps not yours. But then your children's. Or their children. Because this is not a new pattern. It is a pattern that has repeated itself for 1,400 years, everywhere that mindset and inner arrangement has been allowed to grow without resistance. It has its own logic, its own weight, its own direction. And it ALWAYS ends the same place. Because that is the architecture in it.
Talk to an exiled Iranian. An exiled Syrian. An exiled Afghan. An exiled Iraqi. An exiled Lebanese. Talk to a Copt, an Assyrian, a Yazidi, a Maronite - people whose churches and holy places stood there for centuries before Islam even existed. Talk to an Armenian. Talk to a Jew, whose family was driven out of Baghdad, Cairo, Tunis or Sanaa after two thousand years of continuous presence. Talk to a Hindu from the area today called Pakistan. Talk to a Sikh.
They will tell you the same story. Different cities, different centuries, different tellers - same architecture underneath.
Or take a trip to Nigeria - where the full pressure of the mindset plays out these years.
While we here in Europe discuss who is a Dane, and which sentence may offend, Christians there are slaughtered in thousands.
Open Doors' latest count is clear - 72 percent of all Christians murdered for their faith on earth were murdered in Nigeria. 3,500 people. In one year. In one country.
Boko Haram. ISWAP. Armed Fulani militias. Villages extinguished. Churches burned down. People hacked down, while they celebrate Easter. It happens while you read this. It also happened yesterday. It will happen tomorrow.
And it fills almost nothing in the Western public sphere. No marches. No torch processions. No front pages. It does not fit into the narrative about who the victims may be, and who the executioners may be. So we do not see it.
There is an underlying architecture and arrangement at work. It starts with surveilling each other, because one is not pure enough. And then it unfolds from there.
Neither Denmark nor Europe should accept a single tiny millimeter of it. Ever.
