Today is Easter morning.
And Easter morning does not begin with trumpets and triumph.
It begins with a woman walking alone in the dark towards a grave.
She carries spices. She is prepared to conclude. To anoint a body and go home and live with the loss.
She is not prepared for what she finds.
The stone is gone.
What was sealed is open. What was finished is not finished. What was laid in the grave with all the world's weight and all the world's power - is no longer there.
It is the most astounding fact in human history. And the first witness is not an emperor. Not a philosopher. Not a general.
It is a woman - who came to anoint a corpse.
And the World was never the same.
But we have forgotten it.
Not as a conscious decision. But as a slow forgetting - generation after generation - until today we live in a world built upon the foundation that morning laid, but which no longer knows what it is built upon.
And in the void that formed when the foundation was forgotten - a net has been laid.
Not visible. Not with force and chains and open coercion.
But a net all the more effective for that reason. For the net you cannot see, you cannot tear yourself free from. The net that feels like reality itself - like the natural order of things - holds tighter than any prison ever has.
It is this net that keeps the Western person bound to the ground. That blocks the view upward. That presses consciousness down toward the horizontal - toward survival, consumption and approval - and away from the vertical. From calling. From meaning. From what lifts.
Let me show you the meshes in it.
...
Most people in Europe today live with a sensation they cannot put into words. An unease. An emptiness. A diffuse feeling that something is wrong - but they cannot quite figure out what. That they should be happy - they have everything after all - but still there is something missing. That the world is more threatening than it should be. That they are less than they should be.
This is not accidental.
A net has been cast over consciousness in the Western world. A net so finely meshed and so transparent that most do not see it. They just feel that they cannot lift themselves.
...
The first net is FEAR.
Fear is the modern society's primary instrument of control.
Fear of disease. Fear of climate. Fear of saying the wrong word. Fear of thinking the wrong thought. Fear of standing outside the community's approval. Fear of the future. Fear of the past. Fear of who you yourself are. Fear of your own shadow.
A people governed by fear is not free.
It is tame.
A tame people does as it is told. It does not ask. It does not rise. It does not build. It does not dream.
It survives.
And surviving is not the same as living.
Jesus said it directly and without circumlocution - Fear not.
It is the most repeated sentence in all of the New Testament. Not because there is nothing to fear. But because fear has never been the foundation for a life worth living - or a people worth belonging to.
...
The second net is SHAME.
For decades we have learned that the Western inheritance is primarily a story of shame.
Colonialism. Patriarchy. Oppression. Eurocentrism. White guilt. Christian fanaticism. You know the litany. It has been spoonfed through television, media and school.
And yes - all of that is there. It is real. It must be faced.
But it is not the whole story.
It is not even the most important part of the story.
Shame is an instrument of control. A people ashamed of its inheritance does not attempt to steward it. It attempts to rid itself of it. It leaves it to others - to those who are not ashamed. To those who know exactly what they want with it.
A people that cannot stand by who it is - cannot defend what it has built.
And it cannot imagine what it could become.
...
The third net is MEANINGLESSNESS.
It runs deeper than most suspect.
For beneath everything we can see and feel - beneath the emptiness, beneath the surrogates, beneath the diffuse unease - lies a story about what we are.
And that story goes like this -
You are an accident. The universe arose without meaning. Life arose without purpose. You arose without intent. There is no order behind phenomena. No one who created you. No one calling to you. No direction upward.
Just atoms in motion. Just time and chance.
This is the modern paradigm's creation story. Creation without creator. Meaning without source. Human without origin.
And it is the most destructive story a people can tell about itself.
For a human who believes it is an accident - lives like an accident. It demands nothing of itself. It commits to nothing greater than its own convenience. It cannot lift itself - for there is nothing to lift itself toward.
This is not freedom.
This is a dungeon that resembles a garden.
We have removed everything that once gave human life vertical dimension - and a human without this sinks.
Not dramatically. Not with a crash. But quietly and gradually into an existence that is comfortable enough - but empty. Safe enough - but without direction. Connected enough - but deeply lonely.
We have built the most comfortable civilisation in human history.
And we do not know what it is for.
This is not a question of prosperity or technology or political rights. It is a question of what one is placed in the world for. What calls to one. What is worth sacrificing for.
A human who cannot answer that - is not free.
It is lost.
For the human is not created to live horizontally. It is created to live vertically - with a sense that there is something upward to strive toward. Something true to seek. Something good to serve. Something beautiful to create.
...
The fourth net is INFANTILISATION.
The entire mechanism of society's arrangement has been reversed.
What should lift the human - education, culture, institutions, media - is used to make it small. Dependent. Uncertain of itself and its own reason. Convinced that it cannot manage without the experts' guidance, the state's care and the community's approval.
You must not trust your own experience. You must not trust your ancestors' wisdom. You must not trust your faith. You must not trust your instincts as man, as woman, as parent, as human.
Trust the system. Trust the experts. Trust those who know better.
The upright self-sustaining vital human - the one who knows its essential root, its inheritance and its direction - is this system's greatest threat.
For it cannot be governed by fear.
It cannot be bound by shame.
It cannot be filled with meaninglessness.
And it does not need to be told who it is.
For it knows who it is, where it came from, what it is here for and where it is going.
...
The fifth net is DIVISION.
A people who are divided cannot rise together.
And the division is not accidental. It is systematic. And it is cultivated.
Man against woman. Young against old. Native against immigrant. Vaccinated against unvaccinated. Right against left. Those who see it against those who will not see it.
Every single time a people is about to find each other in something common - something true, something that binds them together across all the constructed divisions - a new crisis comes. A new enemy. A new reason to distrust the neighbour.
It is not paranoia to notice the pattern.
It is pattern recognition.
For a people divided against itself has no surplus to see what is happening around it. It is occupied with fighting itself. With defending its position. With proving that the other side is the enemy.
While the net tightens.
What could unite us is not politics. It is not ideology.
It is the common recognition that we are humans created by the same - and that what threatens us does not come from each other.
Paul says it with a precision difficult to improve upon -
'Our struggle is not against flesh and blood - but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness.'
The net cast over Western consciousness is not woven by humans alone. It is older than that. Heavier than that. And it cannot be torn down with politics, with anger or with the right arguments.
It is torn down with truth. With light. With the connection to origin and essential root that no power in the world can take from a Human who has found it.
This is the struggle we are in.
And it is Easter morning that reminds us it can be won.
...
And now - let me draw the other picture.
For it is Easter morning. And Easter morning is not about what was wrong.
It is about what is possible.
Let me show you what happens with a society that decides to harmonise its arrangement with truth, freedom, love and justice.
It does not produce submissive consumers waiting to be told what they may think.
It produces men who dare stand by what they believe - not because it is safe, but because truth is more important than approval. Women who carry life, beauty and strength into the world - not despite who they are, but because they know who they are. Children who grow up with a story about who they are and where they come from - not as nationalism, but as gift. Families who know what they are for and take responsibility for it. Communities that protect the weak and lift the strong. Institutions that serve the Human - not the reverse.
A people who know who they are - do not fear strangers. They can contain them. They can discern. They can say yes and no with clarity and without hatred. Set clear boundaries. Feel truth from lie.
A people who know what they believe - do not allow themselves to be governed by surrogates and replacement religions. They can see them for what they are. False gods.
A people who know their inheritance - are not ashamed of it. They steward it. With open eyes for the mistakes. And with gratitude for what is worth carrying forward.
...
Imagine a Denmark that dares this.
That dares stand by its Christian, Greek and Roman inheritance - not as nostalgia, but as living foundation. That dares build its institutions upon truth instead of ideology. That dares say to its children - you are not an accident. You are not a blank canvas. You carry something in you that is older and deeper and more valuable than any system can ever give you. You are created. Illuminated through. And deeply loved all the way through. You are bearer of something holy. And you have a task.
Imagine a Europe that rises from Holy Saturday and remembers what came.
Not as empire. And not as power over others.
But as the Light it once was - and can become again.
A continent that knows that Freedom is not the absence of obligation - but the consequence of knowing one's origin and taking responsibility for it. That knows that Beauty is not luxury - but a sign that something is in order. That knows that Truth is not relative - but the foundation everything else rests upon.
This is not a utopia.
This is what this continent has actually produced - in the periods when it stood on its own foundation.
And it can be done again.
...
And let me say something personal before I finish.
I have written six posts this week. It has cost something. It always costs something to say it clearly - to stand in the open with what you see and believe and know.
But I have never been more certain that it is necessary.
For I see what is happening around us. I see the net. I see how it keeps people bound to the ground - people who should lift themselves, should build, should dream, should love with all their heart and live with all their strength.
And I know what can loosen it.
Not a political programme. Not an ideology. Not a new expert with a new model.
But a living connection to what is true. To what is good. To what is beautiful. To what is greater than ourselves - and which calls upon the best in us.
What the Human through all ages has been called to connect with - and surrender to.
For the full transformation of the Heart.
God.
This is what Easter morning is.
Not a historical curiosity.
An offer. An invitation. A calling.
...
And let me finish with this.
The darkness is real.
Let no one tell you otherwise. Europe is still in many ways on Good Friday. The threats are real. The dissolution is real. The net is real.
But Easter morning is also real.
And the first witnesses that morning - they were not heroes. They were not strong. They were afraid and confused and ran from the grave in terror.
And yet.
They carried it forward.
That is all that is required of us.
To see it.
To stand by it.
And carry it forward.
Happy Easter, friends
