THE HARDEST THING IN THE WORLD - AND WESTERN EUROPE'S MILLION IMPORT OF SINGLE MEN.
There is something almost touching about how thoroughly the Western world has mapped itself.
It didn't start with psychology.
Long before anyone measured anything, there sat a human being in a half-dark room and said aloud what it had done... AGAIN... and was told to go out and try once more.
Confession is not built for the one who falls once and learns from it. It is built for the one who falls every week, their whole life, and who needs somewhere to come with it. And further back still, there stood on a temple in Delphi two words about knowing yourself - which no one would have spent a single stone to erect, if it had been easy.
Then came psychology, with a different language and the same questions - why does a human being keep doing the same thing, long after it has realised that what it does doesn't work. Sometimes knowing that it will NEVER work. But still does it.
When that wasn't enough, we layered therapy on top. When therapy was too slow, we got coaching. And when coaching also proved too slow, a self-help industry grew up, which every year publishes more books about change than any human being could possibly manage to change from.
The entire edifice rests on one recognition, which none of those who work with humans doubt - that a human being can almost not help being what it already is.
You will eat differently from Monday, and it holds for two days, maybe three, and then you're standing with your hand in the bag and an explanation you can hear yourself doesn't fit.
You will start training, now it's going to happen, new year, new man, and after three weeks the card lies in the drawer and withdraws money for two years, while a voice inside says you're not cancelling it, because you're in progress, you're just starting again next month. There actually exists an entire industry that lives - WELL - off precisely that sentence.
You will be different toward your partner, more spacious, less sharp, and you can hold the mask for approximately three quarters of an hour, until she says it in that way she always says it, and then you're there again, same place, same tone, same man. It takes years to move those patterns, if they move at all, and usually it requires either a crisis or something resembling a minor miracle.
Change in a human being is hard. It is hard for the one who goes to therapy for ten years. It is hard for the one who believes in God and in miracles and seeks recognition in the oldest scriptures the world has. The structure between the ears must first be made soft enough to let go, and that is work the Western world KNEW required pretty much everything a human being has in them - especially if it's to hold for life.
We knew it. We know it. Everyone who has worked with change in humans has seen it again and again and again, in the clients and in themselves.
And this is where it becomes strange.
Because the fact that some of the same people - with all that knowledge, all that expertise, all the institutes and all the reports within reach - decide, not just to receive millions of young people, but import millions of single men from societies where the woman through centuries has had a different and smaller place, and virtually no rights, compared to what she has here.
Not as a mistake. As a plan. As natural arrangement.
And somewhere in that plan lay an assumption, which no one was ever asked to explain - and I can't see anyone has asked about - that what sits so deep in us that we can't even change breakfast, should fall reasonably into place by itself, a couple of years after arrival.
That the view of women, which is passed on through generations, should be unlearned by men who were never asked to unlearn it, and that the result of that unlearning should be a society where women could walk home at night with less nervousness, worry and fear in their stomach than before.
A worry that incidentally has also hit men. Because there followed an equally different orientation and understanding of what it means to be a man and how conflicts are resolved.
For example with knife. As in London. Or machetes. As in France. Or with hand grenades. As in Sweden.
One can certainly believe that the Human Being can almost not change itself.
One can also believe that millions can change themselves by themselves.
One cannot believe both things at the same time.
