My dear comrade Christian hits something important in Berlingske today. I stand right behind it. And in front. And beside.
What the good man is saying is really this -
Calls for violence against Man must NEVER be normalised.
And he's right.
But I want to go a spade deeper. Because in the public conversation we talk about the boundary as if it's just THERE. As if it hangs freely in the air. It doesn't.
The Western Order's vaccination against violence comes from somewhere. And from one place alone.
IMAGO DEI.
Man is made in God's image.
Therefore he is Holy. Inviolable. Free.
It's not a poetic formulation. It is the very foundation beneath everything we take for granted - human rights, the rule of law, the dignity of the individual, the prohibition against taking the law into one's own hands. Remove the foundation, and the boundary becomes negotiable. Then suddenly it's power, the majority or anger that determines who may be violated.
Look around the world. In all darkened societies - where man is only the property of the tribe, the state or the ideology - there violence is not an exception. It is a tool. Because man is not holy. Only useful.
We are conducting an experiment no civilisation has survived: To keep the fruit but fell the tree. To demand man's inviolability while we write the source of it out of our self-understanding, our schools and our governmental foundation.
But the idea disappears the day we let go of the connection. Not with a crash. Slowly. Boundary by boundary. Exception by exception. Precisely as Christian describes it happening right now.
This applies to the Muslim in the mosque. And it applies to the Dane who criticises Islam. Same image. Same boundary. Same freedom.
So let me ask.
If man is not created holy - who decides when he may be violated?
