TO BE BORN IN THE WEST
To be born in the Western World is not just "to be born somewhere on the globe".
It is to be born into a Worldview - an invisible pattern that determines how you see reality, understand yourself, and sense what is good, true and right.
A Worldview is not an opinion. Or a position. It is the - often invisible - lens through which you see Reality itself.
You cannot live without a worldview - only swap one for another. And all worldviews have a God, even those that deny it.
It is your Worldview that determines what you mean by words like "truth", "justice", "love" and "freedom".
In the West, this Worldview has a name -
The Christian Story.
Even if you do not believe in God, you still speak as someone who does. Because everything in you - your language, your morality, your dreams - is shaped by a story you cannot step outside of.
Pause.
Before you turn entirely red in the face and declare yourself the great exception - the unicorn living freely and independently of everything around it - allow me to explain.
Other civilisations in other parts of the world have other lenses for the worldview and upbringing they are born into. They do not see the world as we see it here.
In the East, time is cyclical, for instance - everything repeats.
In Islam, man is first and foremost a servant under a God, not created in His image, but subjected and submitted to His will.
In antiquity, man was a playing piece for gods and fate - not a being with infinite value.
In all these worldviews, man is subjected to something - fate, karma, nature or law.
Only in the Christian does man become elevated to co-creator, for in the Christian story - the one we live in the Western world - everything was inverted. Here man was created in God's image - with free will, conscience and infinite value.
It happened when God became Man, in order to lift man up. It was no longer Man who sacrificed himself for the gods - but God who sacrificed Himself for Man.
It is world history's greatest inversion -
The Almighty bows - for the least.
It was an idea so radical that it forever separated Christianity from all other paths.
Summarised - that Truth is not imposed, only chosen. That God does not demand submission, but called man to freedom - through voluntariness, trust and surrender to love.
That the Way no longer went through the law's thousand rules and demands for purity - but through the person Jesus Christ - God as man, and man lifted to God.
From the moment those ideas began to take root, a new Order began.
Voluntariness instead of compulsion. Trust instead of fear. Surrender to Love and Truth in the certainty that precisely that leads to Freedom.
And sit down before you start the engine up yet again and want to tell me that all these concepts have always existed!
Because yes, it is true - truth, love and justice existed naturally before Christianity - but they meant something entirely different.
Christianity transformed them from within.
TRUTH was before something one knew - a correct relationship between thought and world.
After Christ, truth became "something one lives in."
"I am the way, the truth and the life."
Truth became personal, relational, a call to live in accordance with the divine Light.
LOVE was before desire, friendship or loyalty.
After Christ, love became the very substance of all that is. Agape - love without conditions, without return, without distinction. Love for the enemy, for the sinner, for the stranger. God is Love - and therefore every human being is holy and carries value in themselves.
JUSTICE was before an external order, given by laws or hierarchy.
After Christ, justice became something internal - a question of heart and conscience. Justice became universal instead of tribal.
Everything we today call "human rights", "conscience", "equality", "human inviolability", "mercy", "forgiveness", "just judgment", "love of neighbour", "truth for truth's own sake" and the belief that every human being has an inner light - these are not secular inventions.
They are Christian ideas, torn from their theological root, but still living in form - and nowhere near correspondingly developed and formulated in other cultures, civilisations and their worldviews.
All the ideas we today call modern are therefore not a break with Christianity - but its fruits.
This Western worldview influenced -
SCIENCE, because one believed the world was created with order - Logos.
PROGRESS, because one believed time moved forward towards redemption.
DEMOCRACY, because one believed the conscience in each human being could speak truly.
THE LAW, because one believed man had dignity before God.
EVERYTHING the West is,
EVERYTHING it can be,
rests on that conception.
Even atheism is a Christian inheritance - for only in the Christian world can one imagine that God could be absent.
We are in many ways in our godless time like children who deny our parents - but who still speak with their voice.
We live inside a story so deep that even our rebellion is shaped by it. It has permeated everything - our morality, science, art, law and conscience.
It has made us free people, because it taught us that truth speaks in the individual heart.
That is why, here in the West, you can say what you mean without fear of prison or lash.
That is why you can love whom you will, work for what you believe in, and seek truth, even when it hurts.
For here freedom is not merely a right - it is a duty. A duty to use truth - not hide it.
That is why we judge power - do not worship it.
Why we protect the weak, honour the just, and believe that every human being contains something holy.
It is not perfect.
But it is the closest humanity has ever come to freedom.
And it did not grow from the earth as an accident - it grew from a faith.
And it is worth remembering.
For without that faith, all this quietly withers away.
For the story from which it all springs cannot be replaced by market logic, technology or tolerance. It can only be lived, remembered and renewed - by people who dare to stand by what made us free.
Therefore be proud of the Western world's enormous contribution to human freedom.
For it was here the thought of the free, conscientious human being was born.
Here, where the belief that truth could dwell in the heart of anyone created the foundation for all we call law, progress and dignity.
Be proud - not in arrogance, but in gratitude.
For freedom did not come by itself.
It came into being through centuries of struggle, doubt and faith, through people who placed truth higher than their own security.
To live in the West is to inherit all that.
To be given a responsibility - not only for ourselves,
but for the story that made us free.
Preserve it.
Understand it.
Carry it forward.
For if the light in the West goes out, the whole Earth goes dark.
