I know this sounds provocative at first glance.
It goes against what many believe about themselves.
But it is true nevertheless -
If you were born in Denmark - or generally in the West - you are Christian.
Not necessarily in your confession of faith.
Not necessarily in your self-understanding.
But in everything that actually matters - your values, your instincts, your morality, your way of thinking and feeling.
And I want to explain precisely how - and why - it makes complete sense to say this. Because once you see the mechanism, it's like a light being switched on. You understand yourself, your country and your culture in a new and deeper way.
It's a fact few dare say out loud - and one I myself denied for the first 40+ years of my existence - because in our time it frightens us, more than in any previous period, that we might be shaped by something we didn't choose ourselves.
But we are.
All of us.
You are shaped.
We are shaped.
Our entire civilisation is shaped by Christianity - to a degree so pervasive that we don't even notice it. It's like the air around us. Like gravity. Invisible - but absolutely indispensable.
Let me illustrate - try to picture the person you are -
That you believe all human beings have value - regardless of age, status, gender or strength.
That you feel responsibility for the weak, the sick, the fallen, the homeless.
That you were raised to be honest, take responsibility, speak the truth.
That you expect power to be limited, and that the individual has rights that must not be violated.
That you instinctively believe, perhaps even know, that there is a truth - and that man can and should seek it.
That you feel life has a direction, a meaning, a calling.
That you seek love, forgiveness, reconciliation and new beginning.
That you think freedom is something inherent in all living things and is sacred.
That you understand concepts like mercy, charity, sacrifice - without anyone really having explained them to you.
That you are oriented around the Conscience as real - the inner space where you know something is right or wrong - the inner judge, God's voice in man.
When you say, for example -
"I couldn't live with myself if…"
"I feel it would be wrong"
"I must be true to my conviction"
- you are speaking Christianity's language. You stand in Paul's tradition. You think like a Christian - even when you call yourself an atheist.
All these things above - and many more woven deep into your structure - are Christian foundational ideas. They are not universal. They are not global. And they are not "neutral human values" that grow naturally everywhere by themselves.
They don't exist in the same form in the Middle East, Asia or Africa. They're not something you just "come up with" in a modern democracy. They are the result of centuries of theology, preaching, art, legislation, culture, upbringing and storytelling.
You can walk the streets of Tehran, Beijing or Lagos today and feel it.
People think differently.
Feel differently.
Organise themselves differently.
Weigh values differently.
You can see with your own eyes that the entire society and civilisation there - is structured, oriented and organised differently. Than here.
Not as a judgment of whether they are good or bad - but they are different from here - because they are not Christian civilisations.
All these ideas were planted by a Jewish carpenter 2000 years ago - and they then grew into a civilisation in Europe and Scandinavia and from there more broadly.
And you are the result of that story.
You are Christian - before you are Danish, before you are modern, before you are left-wing or right-wing, before you call yourself anything at all.
And you are not this because you do - or don't - go to church. It's not about the institutions. You are it because the culture, your upbringing, has written its story into you, through everything you've surrounded yourself with. Architecture, literature, art, music,
language, morality, courtesy, history, holidays, legislation, understanding of justice, family structure,
your perception of freedom, truth, guilt and forgiveness, your instincts for care and mercy, your idea of time, meaning and purpose, the way you perceive the individual, the way you understand community, even the stories you grew up with - fairy tales, films, myths, heroes - all of it is shaped by Christianity, and all of it has shaped you.
Your instincts are Christian.
Your morality is Christian.
Your conscience is Christian.
Even your idea that "I am a free individual" - is Christian.
You can try to run from it. You can call yourself an atheist. You can say you're "spiritual but not religious." You can fool yourself into thinking you stand completely outside the tradition. A unicorn without influence or connection to the world.
But you will discover that everything you believe, think and feel - rests on the ground you stand on. And that ground is Christian. The lens sits so close to the eyes that it's almost impossible to see, until you venture deep in and examine your thought patterns, look at your behaviour, think deeply about who you are, and what you actually believe.
Because this is so, the task in my eyes is not to deny it. The task is to embrace it.
To begin the inner journey - to discover what it actually means that you are already shaped by the Christian story and the Western worldview that grew out of it.
And simultaneously begin the outer journey - to rediscover the community, the tradition, the symbols, the truth and the depth in the culture that has created you.
To move from ignorance - to awareness.
From cultural heritage - to lived faith.
From reflex - to recognition.
Voluntarily. And in Love of Life.
Because once you see it - once you understand that your values are not random, but inherited from a 2000-year-old tradition of truth - the question is no longer -
"Am I Christian?"
But rather - "How deep will I go into what I already am?"
And then - "Am I willing to take responsibility for the civilisation that has shaped me?"
Let that last question gnaw deep into the cerebral cortex. Because. If you, I, we don't wake up and take this responsibility - then the civilisation and worldview that shaped us into who we are disappears.
