Here is a headline that looks perfectly peaceful at first.
Until you read it one more time.
Let me unpack it.
A government wants to force social platforms to give its own state media priority. That is. They won't ban anything, won't delete anything, just make sure "the right thing" gets pushed to the top, so the citizen is met with it the moment he opens his phone.
It almost sounds like care.
That's always how it sounds in the beginning.
But then there's that small thing no one writes in the headline, the fine print that makes the whole picture tilt.
The outlet that's supposed to be elevated to protect us from "misinformation" is exactly the place where Orwell got his Ministry of Truth. He sat there himself, between 1941 and 1943, broadcasting state-approved speeches over the BBC's overseas service under the Ministry of Information.
Room 101, the room where Man is broken from within, is named after a boring meeting room in BBC headquarters. The man didn't invent the warning. He wrote it down while sitting in the middle of it.
If that stood alone, you could call it British irony - there's plenty wrong over there these years anyway, probably more than most of us can manage to think about - and move on.
But the same week, on the other side of the Channel, the European Commission joins a new social platform, a Swedish enterprise called W, which presents itself with the words "transparency", "privacy" and "free speech".
Von der Leyen is there.
Costa is there.
To be allowed to write on the platform about topics like "free speech" and "freedom of expression", you just have to first apply to be approved by a team that assesses you, and prove who you are by letting an app scan your passport.
"Free" speech... where you apply for permission to speak? "Openness" that begins with showing your papers at the door...?
The sister platforms have even signed a declaration to move away from the big American companies and their "authoritarian governance" as they call it. They put the word on paper themselves. And then built an entrance where you apply for permission to express yourself - and were brazen enough to call it "freedom".
Two words carry the whole thing, and both have been emptied of what they once meant.
In London it's called "misinformation", and it means the speech Power has already decided is wrong.
In Brussels it's called "free speech", and it means the speech that has first been approved.
It's the same move made twice. You take a word everyone loves and fill it with the exact opposite of what it stood for.
The old form of control said - this you may not say. The new one says something far more polite and far more effective -
This you MUST see, and this you MAY say, ONCE we've seen WHO you are.
And the strange thing is, it's not coming from outside. It's not coming from a man in uniform with an enemy at the gate. It's coming from friendly people with good intentions, a lawyer with glasses in one country and a commission with a cause in the other, who genuinely believe they're protecting you, and who would be deeply offended if you called them what they're becoming.
The Western world isn't being toppled. It's being quietly administered away by people who think they're guarding it.
The meme writes itself.
Starmer sits next to Orwell during the exam and glances down at his paper. The difference is just that he didn't read 1984 as a warning. He read it as a manual. And this time Brussels sat beside him and copied.
A Truth that must be IMPOSED, and a Freedom you must APPLY FOR - shall we not agree they've stopped being what they're called.
