We Spent Eighteen Months Negotiating Our Way Back to 1951

SO WE CAN DRINK COCA COLA AGAIN!! 🥤❤️

Denmark and the USA have come to an agreement on Greenland.

It happened, as all major politics does these days…

…in a post on Truth Social Friday night, just before bedtime.

😁

And let's start with the most important thing - what we should really be happy about today.

No American bombs fell over Zealand. Not over Funen either. Jutland and the islands escaped too. The enormous invasion force that for a year and a half has stood ready and poised in a gigantic assault on NATO and the rules-based world order... was never mustered.

Phew.

We made it, friends.

Trump writes that the USA has received permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland. Forever. Without an expiration date. The greatest victory in 100 years, which no president before him has managed.

And honestly - it's hard not to like the boyish, self-satisfied style a little. I grew up with several friends who also, every third sentence, referred to themselves as Preben Elkjær, Boris Becker or Tom Cruise in everything they did. Read him like that. He lives in the time we ourselves came from - back when men were allowed to beat their chests without much occasion.

That was when men had one.

Or - were allowed to have one without saying sorry for it.

The Prime Minister's Office is more measured and writes that the agreement recognises the Kingdom's sovereignty, Greenland's self-determination and the cohesion of the Western alliance.

We don't get much wiser from that. But it is the same agreement they're writing about.

And the Experts™ are already explaining to us that the USA broadly gets what they've had since 1951, plus the cooperation Denmark offered from day one.

Without having read the agreement, of course.
That's how you're an expert these days.

Regardless of what it says, we hope it holds.

Because then the USA can calmly carry out the task Europe itself has assigned them - to defend a continent that for thirty years has thought a military was mostly something you had for nostalgic reasons.

And for equality's sake, naturally.

The law that last year gave Danish women conscription is literally called "Full equality between women and men in relation to conscription".

Think about that.

Not - "The Defence of the Realm" or "For the Nation's and the Danes' Survival".

Equality.

Equality. So women can also get to experience what it's like to be a soldier, before the actual task is handed over to someone who means something by it.

Anyways.

Between the tweet and the post lay a year and a half -

Twenty thousand people in Copenhagen's streets. Hundreds of thousands boycotting American goods. Supermarket chains putting stars on European products so you could steer clear of American ones. The Coke being put back on the shelf with a firm look to the person beside you. Outbursts of anger, expert panels, "our values", solidarity posts, ministers in serious grey suits.

And the selling off of an entire fleet of Teslas, which subdued men were no longer allowed to drive - out of consideration for their wife's anti-American affection.

All of it because of a tweet and a casual remark.

But ok. You were heading for catastrophe in the polls and had to get through an election. And look - the party's worst result since 1903, twelve lost seats - and the prime minister's chair kept anyway, after three rounds of negotiations.

The crisis didn't win votes.
It won the seat.

Well played.

And now - press releases about good cooperation, signature next week, champagne in New York.

So if you've been standing out there in the cold with your sign, or denied yourself a Coca Cola for eighteen months for the sake of world order - and to make sure Trump didn't come riding in on an atomic bomb - then you're allowed to ask what it was you were actually defending.

Because the result of the whole performance ended up being roughly -

That we spent a year and a half negotiating our way back to 1951.

Plus interest.

Because the agreement text itself hasn't been made public yet, so what the USA got on top of that, we don't know. We only know that you rarely negotiate the price down by first staging a year and a half of theatre for the seller.

🤓🤷🏼‍♂️

....

And then one serious thing, before Saturday sets in.

Maybe 1951 isn't the worst place to return to.

Regardless of what Mette thinks about Trump, what Lars thinks, what the EU thinks - what you think, or what I do - this isn't about him.

It's about security.

SOMEONE is going to carry that task in the Arctic.

A vacuum of that size never stays empty for very long. And if the USA doesn't take it, it will sooner or later be taken by China, by Russia - or by players whose names we don't yet know. With their ideas about what "security", "freedom" and "peace" mean.

If you're in doubt about how they understand those three words, read history.

Or look at the countries themselves.

You're getting this week's fitness picture with it - to remind you that you live in - and through - a body. And that you only have one, which is why your experience here on the planet is heavily conditioned by how you treat it.

Get moving! - your posture's starting to look like a banana from all that staring at the phone! 😉❤️

Happy Saturday, friends ☀️
